ALBUM REVIEW - 'ALL THINGS REAL' BY ERIC VAN DOMBURG SCIPIO
FROM HEAVEN ISSUE 3 '06
(TRANSLATED FROM DUTCH)

Steve Adey is an Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter and folk artist who makes a promising début with the incidentally very touching 'All Things Real'. On large parts of the album he recalls a folk-version of Will Oldham, who's already-classic 'I See A Darkness' he covers.
Also tracks like Mary Margaret O'Hara and a cover of Dylan's 'Shelter From The Storm' suggest that Adey seems to be more influenced by the North-American rather than by the European folk tradition. Nevertheless, the strong Blue Nile-like 'Find The Way' and a beautiful version of Douglas MacDonald's 'Evening Of The Day' unmistakably lay bare his Scottish roots. All in all Steve Adey with 'All Things Real' brings a very welcome new Scottish folk sound, which, by the sound of it, will delight us for many years to come. 3/4
